Montada is a new UN-funded project that aims to promote heritage architecture in the Maghreb. As a part of the Euromed Heritage 4 program, Montada (Arabic for “forum”) will advance conservation efforts in Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia through a series of forums intended to engage local populations in the preservation of the built environment. The forums will be held in six cities (Sale, Marrakech, Ghardaia, Dellys, Sousse, and Kairouan), and will provide an opportunity for politicians, civil society members, and civilians to come together to discuss and promote heritage issues and awareness. These participatory forums will be carried out with the assistance of a team of international experts providing technical and scientific assistance. The goal is to nurture communal approaches to securing heritage architecture by encouraging local citizens from all sectors of society to see the built environment as an important part of their shared cultural identity.
