International Women’s Day at Aga Khan University
Speakers to discuss protection against harassment of women at workplace
The Protection against Harassment of Women at Workplace Bill 2009 was unanimously passed by the National Assembly on January 21, 2010. The Bill has increased punishment for the crime to three years in prison and a fine of up to Rs 500,000 and further proposes penalties that include demotion, compulsory retirement and dismissal from service.
Aga Khan University’s Working Group for Women has organised International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8, 2010 and the Bill will be discussed by renowned speakers including Zia Awan, President, Lawyers for Human Rights and Legal Aid; and Simi Kamal, Chief Executive, Raasta Development Consultants.
IWD is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women’s past, present and future. In certain countries such as the Peoples Republic of China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria it is a national holiday. The first event was run in 1911, with the coming year being IWD Global Centenary 1911-2011.
