The Qur´an: A Primer for Non-Muslims
Muslims believe that the Qur´an was revealed directly from God, Allah in Arabic, to the Prophet Muhammad by the Archangel Gabriel. According to Islam, the Qur´an, meaning “the recitation,” was the last of a series of divine messages that began with Adam. Muhammad received the revelations for twenty-three years, and recited them to his followers who transcribed them into the Qur´an just after the Prophet´s death. Dr. B. Jill Carroll offers a primer on the Qur´an, explaining its origin and general content, as well as the Qur´anic traditions of calligraphy, bookbinding, and illumination.
Presented by Dr. B. Jill Carroll, Adjunct Professor of Religious Studies, Rice University
