August 25, 2010 The Patients’ Behbud Society for AKUH has launched its Zakat campaign to assist financially disadvantaged patients to avail high quality health care at Aga Khan University Hospital. Founded in 2001, the society has utilised Rs 270 million so far for treatment of over 10,000 patients. The Society is a legal entity managed by a group of prominent citizens independent of AKUH, and its accounts are audited annually by a reputed firm of Chartered Accountants.
“Hundred per cent of Zakat collected goes towards the treatment of mustehiq patients only, not one penny is spent on the advertisement or administrative work,” said M. R. Monem, Chairman & Chief Executive of the society. “The society’s single source of funding is Zakat contributions received from individuals, staff and employees of Aga Khan University, donors and corporates, which in turn are disbursed to mustehqeen in accordance with Shariah.”
